Can I still contact my GP during the coronavirus crisis if I'm having symptoms?

Posted on: Wednesday, 15th April 2020 by Imogen Pinnell, Health Information Manager

“What do I do right now if I’m having symptoms? Can I still see my GP? Am I wasting their time?”

A lot has changed due to the coronavirus crisis, but some things stay the same - this includes your GP’s role. They’re your first point of contact for anything that is concerning you. You might have to contact them in a different way, with lots of appointments being carried out on video or the phone, but the outcome should be the same.

We are hearing from lots of women who are experiencing potential symptoms and are unsure of what to do. Some don’t know if their GP is still available and others are worried that they might be wasting their GP’s time. Your health is still your GPs top priority and this includes looking after your cervical health.

If you are having any symptoms, or have any other health problems, then call your GP. They are still there and want to hear from you.

Not sure of the symptoms of cervical cancer?

The main symptom of cervical cancer is bleeding which is unusual for you – this could mean bleeding after sex, in between periods or post-menopausal bleeding. Other symptoms include changes to your discharge and unexplained lower back pain.

These symptoms can be signs of many things and cervical cancer is usually not the cause. However, you always need to tell a healthcare professional about them.

Not everyone who has these symptoms will be seen by their GP at this time. This depends on your individual situation and your health history. However, these sorts of decisions are being made to keep you, your GP and the rest of the staff in the NHS safe. Remember that other aspects of your health, like cervical, are still really important even though coronavirus might be at the forefront of your mind at the moment.
